"Ramadhan: Life in the Fast Lane" salient points

"O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (Fasting in the month of Ramadhan) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become the ones who have taqwa (piety, love, fear and consciousness of Allah)" (Al-Baqarah 2:183)

- Fasting is not just about hunger and thirst. The whole objective of fasting is to attain Taqwa - the love, fear, and consciousness of Allah. If you haven't attained this, then ask yourself: "what are you really trying to achieve?"

- many amongst mankind live their lives on 'auto pilot' - they eat, drink, work, play, sleep - every day, living on routine. When is the last time we took a step back and live our lives consciously, actually taking control of our life? When is the last time we stopped to ponder about the true purpose of our existence?

Allah did not create men to eat, drink, work, play and sleep - this is what cows do. We are not cows. We are created to live our lives in connection to the One who Created us.

Ask yourself: gauge yourself and ask : when is the last time I was thankful to Allah for the little blessings in my life? When was I last conscious that Allah had declared "If you give thanks (for My blessings), I will add more - but if you are thankless, verily! My punishment is indeed severe" (Ibrahim 14:7) - and I realized that the more I give thanks for these things, the more He adds?

This is the whole spirit and objective of Ramadhan - a small dose of pain for us to have that bit of realization, to snap out of our auto pilot and live in consciousness, and connection with Allah. In realization of our objective in life.

- Allah has chosen the month of Ramadhan - the one special month out of 12 months, to be the most blessed, beloved and beneficial of all months, just as he chose Yusuf (Prophet Joseph) above his 11 other brothers to be the best, the most blessed, beloved and beneficial to his family, and the rest of mankind - what is our attitude towards this special treatment Allah has given us?

- Companions narrated that the Prophet was most generous during Ramadhan (literally "like a whirlwind") - Towards attaining taqwa, this teaches us a feeling of selfness in generosity - giving to others, even when we are in need (of food).

- Fasting teaches us to have empathy, soften our hearts to feel what our less-fortunate brothers and sisters around the world feel - ones who have been deprived by Allah in this world, to taste the delicious foods that we taste - who, insha Allah, if were believers will taste much greater blessings in the Hereafter.

- Abstaining from sexual intercourse with the spouse teaches us to also empathize with our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters who are imprison - some for life, perhaps will never get the opportunity to experience that pleasure

- Feelings of generosity in sadaqah and zakat in Ramadhan - are training for us to detach us from the fake and temporary life of this world, and direct our attention and focus to the everlasting and beautiful abode of the Akhirah

Love of dunya (this worldly life) vs Love of Akhirah are on two opposite sides of a scale: if one gets heavier, the other one gets lighter.

If the past 11 months has not allowed us to attain those feelings - make this Ramadhan is that mental, emotional and spiritual training to do so!

- Advice: Don't jump into Ramadhan full-swing without training. Even if you were to compete in a badminton/soccer match, you would do prior training beforehand - else you would have cramps all over! Similarly, the Prophet's sunnah is to fast a lot for the 2 months preceding Ramadhan (Rajab and Sha'ban) - this is highly encouraged!

If we have readied ourselves to be used to this abstinence, by the time Ramadhan comes, we will not feel exhausted and over-eat - so we can focus on one of the best blessings of Ramadhan - TARAWIH prayers! Allahu Akbar.

And then of course when Ramadhan over, we finish off with the 6 days of fasting in syawwal - the Prophet said (the meaning of which) "The one who fasts the month of Ramadhan AND THEN fasts 6 days in syawwal is as if he has fasted a year"

Scholars say that this is to make up for whatever deficiencies that we may have made in Ramadhan which we've invested our greatest efforts.

There is an amazing Wisdom behind this arrangement of voluntary and obligatory fasting (2 months of recommended vasting, 1 month obligatory and 1 month of recommended) - this is similar to prayer for zuhur - 4 rakaah of recommended prayer before, 4 for actual obligatory Zuhur prayer, and 2 recommended rakaah after Zuhur prayer.

So here is the sequence of the "best of deeds" :

1) preparation & training for the act of worship

2) actual act, and

3) additional act in covering up for deficiencies

- build your relationship with Allah with your du'aa - while waiting for breaking the fast, make lots of prayers, du'aa and request from Allah - this is the best time to do it. Rather than stare at the food while waiting for the adzan, utilize that opportunity to make du'aa and request as much as you can from Allah.

Again, going back to the initial point: get out of auto-pilot mode, and build up on that taqwa and piety

Q: If Shaytan is chained up in Ramadhan (as mentioned by the Prophet), then why are "some" people still committing evil and wrongdoings?

A: Because there are "some" people - out of carelessness and/or following their desires - have allowed Shaytan to train them well for the other 11 months - so when Ramadhan comes, 'Auto-Pilot' kicks in!

So snap out of it and become the change that YOU need!

May Allah make this Ramadhan the best, most beneficial and the most blessed means of attaining love, fear, consciousness and piety of Allah

"They just won't listen to my advice!" Check yourself (Part 1)

friend of mine related an interesting quote: "Advice doesn't work because those who need to heed it, can't hear it."

"So how? How do we help them realize they need to change?"

Straightforward question; not-so-straightforward answer.

The reality is, giving advice (and that obviously includes da'wah) is like selling stuff: if the person you're selling to, isn't convince that he needs it - he just won't buy it

When it comes to advice, the golden rule is - if you love something, don't be selfish: share it with others. And if you don't love good advice, you need to check yourself

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him said) "None of you has faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself" (Al-Bukhari)

You can't love someone if you don't love that he/she becomes a better person.

If you want to examine the effectiveness of your sales (i.e. advice/da'wah), you can break it down to 3 aspects:

the salesperson - the one giving advice
the product - the advice
the prospect buyer - customer - the advised person

Instead of blaming the customers' stubbonrness, let's focus on one aspect we do have direct control of : ourselves, i.e. the salesperson - after all, "Allah will not change the state of a people until they change what is in themselves" (Ar-Ra'd 13:11) - stop the finger pointing (he's too stubborn, etc); let's focus on our main circle of influence:

1) The salesperson - YOU; people sometimes fail to realize is that sometimes the root cause of the unsuccessful transaction really has to do with the adviser him/herself. Here's a quick checklist of things you should ask yourself

Do YOU have confidence in your own product? - if you're still 50-50 about your product, don't shoot yourself in the foot. A silence in recognition of ignorance is much wiser than empty rambles of falsehood. If Tobacco lobyists can have it their way, making billion-dollar promotional transactions with world-class confidence, knowing that their product is perhaps the #1 artificial cause of cancer - isn't your good advice worthy of a bit more confidence, and credible evidence to support your cause? go do your homework.

Do YOU really understand & know your product? - as Steven Covey put, "seek to understand, then to be understood" . Don't fire blanks: go do your homework. Don't get yourselves into sticky situations which decrease your credibility. 'Goreng' is not an option - especially if you're talking to someone who respects you (parents & ustazs, take note). The most learned companions of the Prophet - people who stood by him and witnessed him as the Revelation of God was brought down to him - when confronted with difficult questions, always answered with an honest and humble "Allah and His Messenger Know best" - so let's put things into perspective: if the people who had the best license to 'goreng' didn't do so, we definitely don't have that right! And this holds especially true for the ones who relate false and/or weak narrations, and/or baseless unfounded opinions of individuals. (*this needs to have a moderate approach - we cannot use "tak cukup ilmu"/ "not enough knowledge" as an excuse to not give advice.. the point is we should strive to continuously improve ourselves)

Do YOU know why you are selling that product in the first place? - Often we steer the 'advice' session to a series of mental and emotional haymakers and uppercuts, losing goal of what we are really trying to achieve. The whole goal of advice is to improve the person, not destroy him/her. The whole goal of da'wah is to make him/her closer to the Creator, and to inspire him to improve his relationship with his creator - put this in mind before you activate those defense mechanisms or project your ego.

Do you know why they need the product? This should be covered in Pt2 (if i somehow find the time to write it) - but basically, empathy is an essential aspect of advice. "Give people what they need, in the way of what they want", Yawar Baig once advised. Sure, the Prophet said "if the people knew the reward of praying Fajr/Subuh and Isya' in congregation (at the masjids), they would present themselves there even if they had to crawl" (Al-Bukhari) - but IF the reality and confidence of this reward isn't in someone's heart, how can he/she be convinced he/she needs to do it? Reword your da'wah and advice to make them believe they need to do it.

Do YOU actually use the product? - Oh, this is a big problem: O People! Please, WALK THE TALK! Allah says "O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do?! Most Hated by Allah is that you say that which you do not do!" (As-Saff:2-3). Note to Parents who send their children to religious schools hoping that the teachers would do some miracles to transform their children - and abandon their prayers & have great lunch feasts in Ramadhan: Be consistent with yourself: YOU ARE NOT CREDIBLE IF YOU DON'T WALK THE TALK. "Do you Enjoin righteousness on the people and yet you yourselves forget, while you recite the Scripture! Have you then no sense?!" (Al-Baqarah 2:44)

Are you NICE? - The Prophet said "i have been sent to perfect good manners", and that "i guarantee the highest place in Paradise for the person with the best of character" - let's live by this standard. Period. They say "you can only sell to friends" (Yawar Baig) - have you earned their trust?

Are you PROUD of your product? - This is another problem. When it comes to guarding their own principles (which they try to impose on others), in certain situtaions, suddenly people become very apologetic & compromising - getting back to point above, not having confidence in your own product. In the perspective of Muslims, sometimes they even feel disadvantaged that they are unable to do things like 'partying' or 'showing off their stuffs'. Are you kidding me?! O Muslims - You have been given guidance to uphold rules that guard you from corruption of yourself and your relationship with God - isn't this worth to feel honoured and give you that burning desire to HELP others?

Do you utilize attractive packaging for your product? - "oh its dawah stuff, doesn't have to be so nice... it's the message the counts" - Please lah, fren. If people can invest ridiculous amounts of money to make super-bombastic and flashy BEER advertisements (& be successful at it), don't you think the Message of connecting people to God deserves a bit more QUALITY?! Bring on the humour, class and style - Quality is universally appreciated: put it into practice.

How PRO are you - Do you treat the guy with respect? - the fact that we are in a position to give advice doesn't make us better than the person: it's important that we don't look down on him/her. The fact that Allah has bestowed His Favour upon you to know that bit of knowledge should keep you in check, not to feel proud and high over others. The Prophet said, "whomsoever has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart equal to an atom's weight shall not enter Paradise - (that is), the arrogance to disregard the truth, and to look down upon others" (Muslim) Remember, Iblees, the Arch Enemy of Man, in Al-Baqarah 2:34, Allah describes the defining characteristic of Iblees' disbelief and rebellion to be arrogance. In Al-A'raf 7:12, Iblees tells Allah the reason of his refusal to obey Allah's commandment - "I am better than him, You created me from fire and him You created from clay". Don't fall into this trap of arrogance - to be deprived of paradise is to render your entire life to be in vain. Respect others, treat disagreements professionally, and abandon the argument when things get hairy - the Prophet said "i guarantee a home in the middle of Paradise for he who abandons an argument when he is in the right"

Why give up so easily? - "i've tried advising her, but it just doesn't work - i throw in the towel". People don't change overnight - any ex-smoker will be able to tell you that. One advice rejected, and you give up. That either shows one of three things: either (a) you don't have strong perseverence, (b) you didn't really believe in the message after all, (c) you don't care for the person anymore.

Do you firmly persevere through the nonsense? - any motivator will tell you that the true essence of any successful individual is one's adherence & integrity to his/her own principles. If you give up, you have indirectly sent a message that your product really wasn't that good after all. A little bit of hurt is just to test how firm you hold on to those principles. Prophet Nuh alaihissalam stayed among his people 950 years to advise his people to worship God Alone - and the scholars say that his followers didn't exceed 100. Question: Have you lived 950 years? Question 2: Have you GIVEN ADVICE for 950 years? If you haven't, then stop whining and get back on your feet. If you have, you can either (a) sign up for Ripley's Believe it or Not, or (b) go to your nearest Neurological Unit for a checkup.

Are you proactive? - an airbag has no value to a dead person. People always make the mistake of waiting for accidents to happen - some calamity to strike, before they (egoistically) say "I knew it" - don't wait till the person drives to a wall before you give him the map. Set the standard before hand

Do you "walk the talk"?! - For the love of Allah, i can't emphasize this enough. Lets sidetrack a little: Did you realize that most of the time in the Qur'an, you find that whenever Allah refers of His disapproval, He always refers to the depravation of His love, (e.g. Allah loves not the transgressors (2:190), Allah loves not the disbelievers, sinners (2:276), Allah loves not the Oppressors (3:140); Allah loves not the Wasters (7:31), Allah loves not those who trespass beyond bounds (7:55)) - why? Because to be deprived of the Love of Allah - the Love of Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem; is the most unfortunate thing that a living creature and experience

- but when it comes to not walking the talk, He declares that "Most Hateful it is with Allah that you say that which you do not do" (As Saff 61:3) - heavy words, my friend - something to ponder about!

Make Allah make our hearts firm, increase us i knowledge, increase our love to advise others, and improve the effectiveness & quality of our 'sales' - Ameen!

Phew! Glad i finally got that out of my system.

Complaint to The Star for article "Paying for Fun"

This email was originally sent at 10:45pm, Wednesday 2nd February 2011 - CC-ed to a long list of family and friends.Including the Prime Minister himself.

Dear respected writers of “the rage” & the Star,

I begin in the name of Allah – All praises and thanks to Him, Lord of the Worlds. In Him Whom I seek His pleasure, and in His name I begin.

This article was published on Thursday, 27th January 2011, titled “Paying for fun” – informing readers about the widespread availability of prostitution in Malaysia today.

Dear writers,

What is the point of publishing such a disgusting article in a public newspaper? What are you trying to achieve?

If you can recall what we learnt back in our years of SPM – the white colour within the Malaysian flag symbolizes moral purity – holding up high, how strongly we uphold moral and ethical values. And even the patriotic song “Jalur Gemilang” states, with a positive note, that “Putihmu bersih budi pekerti”.

So I am surprised that no one amongst the editorial staff at the Star has done SPM – clearly you don’t know these things! Congratulations for landing that job without SPM!

Or could it be that, some – or all – of you have taken SPM, but you do not practice what you learn?

Are you going to blame our education system, somehow? Or is it something else?

I am a strong believer in a better tomorrow, and a more productive, value-driven youth that will drive us towards a better tomorrow.

But look at what we have in today’s headlines – promotion of prostitution?! There is no indication whatsoever that you disapprove of such behavior – in fact, you even conveniently dedicated an article to inform the public about how easy it is to go online and purchase cheap sex.

So again I ask, what is the point of writing this article, and promoting it on the front page of The Star? For profits?

I am sure that, as you are reading this e-mail, you are generating a response in your head – ready to pounce at me with the typical rationalization, and I’ve heard it all before – “we just display the facts : it’s up to people for them to choose!”

Why don’t you tell that to your 17-year old son who want some entertainment?

Why don’t you tell your mid-life-crisis HUSBAND who is stressed out at work?

Why don’t you tell that to your wife before you meet your pals for the night out?

Why don’t you tell that to your 15-year old daughter who wants quick cash?

Or better yet - what if you found out that the GRO that your interviewee has been deflowering all along was actually your SISTER. or your MOTHER. Not so "let them choose" anymore, i see?

People these days invest ridiculous amount of effort to promote negative cultures with the heartless rationalization of “let them choose” – all in the name of profits – but do YOU have what it takes to invest effort to promote POSITIVE VALUES, AND THEN LET THEM CHOOSE?! Do YOU have that character strength in you to defend those values ?!

Because it seems that the only time people truly invest effort to inculcate positive values was back in school – which occasionally SOME people don’t practice eventually, anyway, when they write articles violating values of the Malaysian flag!

Think about it, my friends: how does the public fall?

A long time ago, modesty – wearing decent clothes, guarding chastity, lowering gazes and loyalty to spouses – was something which garnered deep veneration and inspiration. These days it is completely lost.

How?

Because somewhere along the lines, someone decides to spread immorality across the land.

Because society subconsciously realizes “hey, you know what? It’s actually OK! People DO these kinds of things”

Because society refuses to look up to the “nerd” who defends morality and says “this is wrong!”

Because profits and marketability supersede integrity.

Our society is on the verge of its downfall – and with this article, the Star is part of the vehicle to that downfall.

So by Allah, I ask you: are those profits for popularity really worth riding this vehicle of moral downfall?

So free sex has gone public now – what’s next? Drugs? Murder?

Sure, you can also justify yourself by saying that “oh, it’s a free country!”

Or “Oh, people write about them anyway!”

Or “the youth know about it already”

But guess what?

Here’s the reality – if you are articulate enough, you can justify anything – but it doesn’t make it RIGHT

Oh yes - all this without even pointing the fact that prostitution is actually ILLEGAL in the first place. In fact, Wikipedia shamelessly states that in Malaysia, "laws banning prostitution remains largely reinforced" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Malaysia) - this is the image that is easily accessible in the world: and here you are, exacerbating this image.

Ironically, an open public webpage like wikipedia doesn't promote prostitution in Malaysia. But you do..!

Oh! And I have noticed that you have a MUSLIM writer, Mr HH – amongst those who produced this rubbish!

Dear non-Muslim writers,

I would like to sincerely apologize on behalf of Muslims that our Muslim friend, Mr HH, who wrote this article, completely misrepresented Islam and blatantly going against Islamic principles & moral values.

Dear Muslim brother who wrote the article,

May Allah have Mercy on all of us, akhi. I remind you with the meanings of the word of Allah, Lord of the Worlds:

“Verily, those who like that (the crime of) illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated (spread) amongst those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not” (An-Nur 24:19)

Or if that isn’t clear enough,

“Those who disbelieved and hinder (others) from the Path of Allah, for them We will add torment to the torment; because they used to spread corruption” (An-Nahl 16:88)

Think about it, sir. A youth may have gone through the article, and subconsciously decided that “wow – I didn’t know it was that easy – great! I'm going to get me some”

And you might have been responsible for the starting point of the downfall of another person’s life.

We have been given the honour to embrace the religion of God, Who wants us to protect our self-respect and our honour from committing disgusting crimes such as illegal sexual intercourse – aren’t you proud of that self-respect? Why lower yourself down to people who do not hold on to these noble principles?!

Dear brother H,

We will all face death one day, and we will all be raised back and questioned for every single thing that we do in this short life on Earth. And we’ll be paid back in full. People can deny this resurrection all they want – but it doesn’t change the fact that it WILL happen. You can try this experiment at home: close your eyes as you put your hand in the burning oven, in denial convincing yourself it doesn’t work – tell me if it hurts.

But fret not, dear brother – I only wish to correct you, and I wish to help you to way that is better. Allah tells us “O My slaves who have transgressed themselves! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah – verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” (Az-Zumar 39:53)

Repent to Allah, dear brother. We all make mistakes – the only way to succeed is by tawbah (repentance)

The Prophet said, “Every son of Adam is a sinner. And the best of sinners is he who constantly repents”. (Tirmidzi)

Let us work together towards the common goal of earning the pleasure of Allah and attaining His Jannah – abandon this blatant spread of corruption. If you wish to change better, I will gladly offer my assistance “.. Help you one another in righteousness and piety – but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment” (Al-Ma’idah 5:2)

Use your writing skills in the cause of good - don’t let it go to waste.Do not squander this wonderful opportunity to become a role model to the people around you, brother. We live in this world and we have this one chance to earn the mercy of Allah – don’t waste yours.

Let this be a reminder for you, me and everyone else in this list. I am only just another Muslim brother who is reminding his loved ones for the sake of Allah - because Love is a mandatory aspect in our religion.

As for the other editors at the Star, I sincerely hope you do something about this – issue public apology, reproach yourselves for allowing that article to touch your newspapers – whatever. Just DO SOMETHING.

For whatever that you believe in – and I sincerely hope that it is God – please, halt this nonsense and start propagating the positive values. It’s never too late to change – you just have to make that choice.

The scars will still be there but let’s not let the infection spread any further.

I am sending this e-mail with CC to my family, loved ones, and friends – I may not have the millions of readers to propagate this message to, I may not have the power to change the world – but I am a responsible human being and fellow Malaysian – first and foremost the servant of God – a Malaysian who cares about the youth, who bothers about promoting positive values, and who will not sit idle while the minds of my beloved brothers and sisters in humanity have their minds corroded in the name of profit, marketing and business.

Oh, and I am putting the Prime Minister in my CC list, too. Yes, i am serious.

I may not have the influential power to reach out to millions – a right that has been defiled and abused many times in the media today – including this article – but I do have the will to do what is in my control. Because I will not let what is beyond my control affect what is within my control.

Because if it’s not Malaysians who do not stand up for MALAYSIAN moral values, then let me ask you – who else?!

If it’s not Muslims who do not defend the honour and self respect of the Islamic society – then who else?!

I end this e-mail with an open invitation to everyone within the loop of this e-mail to become better persons, build strong healthy societies which hate negativity – in accordance to what is pleasing to the one true God. And of course, for the non Muslims, I invite you – come, let’s recognize the purpose of our Lives to earn the pleasure of the Creator – and become the best that we can be in this short life. Let us all - Muslims AND non-Muslims - learn more about Islam and by Allah, the greatest treasures will unfold before your eyes.

Dear all those in the CC list – to all you mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters whose futures are at stake - let us all play our roles in whatever is within our abilities to curb the mainstream spread of evil within society.

Malaysians still care – and that we will not sit idle in the midst of blatant, public injustice & moral corruption.

Your reward is with Allah- if not in this life, it will be in the Hereafter – “..O My people! I Ask you of no wealth for it, my reward is from none but Allah. I am not going to drive away those who have believed. Surely, they are going to meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people that are ignorant!” (Hud 11:13)

“.. and with Allah are the best of rewards” (Al-Imran 3:195)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all." (Muslim)

What defines you? What legacy have you left behind?

Have we ever allowed others to reap the benefits of the seeds we have planted?

"It is your character, your actions, what you stand for, your principles and your values, which define you.

Not what you possess. What you possess can be stolen or taken away from you.

Your character, your values, your principles - these are the stuff of memories that you leave behind.

By these you will be remembered, honorably or otherwise.

Live a life such that you will be remembered with honor.

Anyone sensible enough will seek to add value to himself, not cost. Possessions add cost, not value.

People who believe that possessions add value, or seek to convince others of this, seemingly have no value for themselves.

The 'awesomeness' of your car, your house, your watch, your clothing - none of these define you, are not statements, nor indicators of what human being you are." (Mirza Yawar Baig, "Bringing Up a Muslim Child")

We tend to deceptively drive ourselves into the mentality that our significance is marked by the physical magnitude of the wealth and richess we leave behind.

Let's take a step back and evaluate for ourselves - how do you measure the significance of a person? Let's take an easy example, the Top 100 Most Influential Persons in History, by Michael Hart. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_100

And you will see that, this contemporary historian acknowledges that, throughout the course of human history - all the 100 most influential people, are not recognized for the material wealth that they leave behind. It's always the contribution, the role and effect they have have on society - and the footprint they leave behind on the hearts and minds of other men - men and women who have never met them - many many years after their death.

Which really puts into perspective, the authentic hadith narrated in Sahih Muslim, where the Prophet, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"When the son of Adam dies, all of his good deeds are cut off except three:

1) a perpetual charity (which continues to benefit others)

2) good knowledge which benefits others; and

3) the prayers of a righteous child/progeny for his parents"

When you leave this material world, the Prophet tells us that the only thing that is of any avail to us, is of the positive things that we have left behind - the beneficial contributions to society, and the righteousness of our children (who, in turn, will continue to benefit others too!)

and you see, in some way or another, those 100 men were listed there, due to the significance of one or a combination of the three aspects listed above.*pls read disclaimer below

... Which of course, isn't surprising that this amazing statement came from the very same man - Muhammad - whom Michael Hart placed as the Number 1 most influential person in the history of mankind

Read the newspapers - memorials of people who have passed away. Who cares what physical riches they have gathered? What earned them a page in the newspaper is the true value that they've brought to the society and people around them.

Who cares about the jaded pop star who owns a 15-million dollar mansion by the sea who died because of drug overdose?

So let's take a backseat, reflect, and ask ourselves - what defines us?

What have we left behind for others?

When you go, will you be loved, or hated?

When you go, will people be relieved, or grieved, at your absence?

All that wealth and possessions that we have hoarded and amassed today - is it really that important?

Begin with the end in mind: what we do today - will these be of any avail to us tomorrow? Or even after we pass away?

..Or are we heedlessly enjoying fleeting things that will be a cause of regret, when we come back to our senses some day?

There will come, a time to change to a better person, and that time is NOW.

"Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe to be affected by Allah's Reminder, and that which has been revealed of the truth?

Lest they become as those who received the Scripture before, and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened?

And many of them were rebellious and disobedient" (Al-Hadid 57:16)

And Allah knows best.

- Why Islam? Why not!

"And remind them - for verily, the reminder profits those who believe" (Adz-Dzariyat 51:55)

*Disclaimer: before some of you jump on your seats, i fully acknowledge the fact that some of the people in Michael Hart's top 100 list (and some amongst the honourable mention) are not good people... in fact some of them are downright evil. No, I didn't say Hitler - but you get the point.

The point is to show the significance of the legacy we leave behind - the reason they have had such an influence is because of what they did - not what they owned.

And indeed, this also shows that conversely, any significant evil which you have caused in society will also leave a mark on them for many, many years to come.

the BLAMING culture - put an end to it!

Muhammad (peace & blessings of God be upon him), said:

“If somebody finds fault, blames you, and makes you feel ashamed of any of your defects,

do not (retaliate &) make him feel ashamed of any of his defects (in return).”

(Abu Dawud)

Usually, when somebody points out one of our shortcomings, whether in meetings, e-mails, workshops, challenge sessions, or even in domestic arguments at home – when they mention our flaws & defects, our ‘normal defense mechanism’ instinctively kicks in - we go on the defensive and start finding faults with them in return!

But – Allah tells us – the worst thing we could do is to take that insult, wrap it up, and throw it in a fireball to someone else! And yet this is something very prevalent amongst us today!

Allah tells us the effects of practicing the blaming and ‘pointing finger’ culture:

"And whoever earns a fault or a sin and then throws it on to someone innocent, he has indeed burdened himself with falsehood and manifest evil”(An-Nisa 4:112)

As if this is not given enough warning & emphasis in the Qur’an, Prophet Muhammad also said "A believer is not a fault-finder and is not abusive, obscene, or course."(Al-Bukhari, book of manners #313)

Are we having this attribute of being a BELIEVER, o Muslims?

Yes, sometimes you are wrongly at fault, stabbed in the back, and it’s VERY TEMPTING to get back at the fella – especially if you think you’re better than him/her

But you know what, O believers? Think twice before you lash out your tongue – he/she might be BETTER than you after all:

“O you who believe!

Let not some men among you laugh (& look down upon) others; it may be that they are better than them (the ones laughing);

nor let some women laugh (& look down upon) at others: it may be that that they are better (than the ones laughing)

do not defame another, or insult one another by bad nicknames

how evil is it, to insult one’s brother after having Faith

And whosoever does not repent, then such indeed are the Zalimun (the oppressors)”

(Al-Hujarat 49:11)

So the advice of our beloved Prophet in the hadith above - i.e. "do not retaliate humiliation against others" (abu dawud) - is that we should listen quietly and evaluate what we are being told:

- If this criticism is true, and there is something we can improve about ourselves, it is only to our own advantage to listen to it & heed – Alhamdulillah!

- If the criticism is unjustified, then we are rewarded for our patience and good behaviour in not retaliating. The angels (mala’ikah) will take care of defending our honour.

Yes, when he/she insults you– your ego get challenged, your honour takes a minor blow – patience will feel very painful. But you know what? Be certain, that Allah KNOWS what you’ve gone through – and He will reward you for that patience!

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “Never a believer is stricken with a discomfort, an illness, an anxiety, a grief or mental worry or even the pricking of a thorn, except that Allah will (of a surety) forgive (some of) his sins on account of his patience” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

.. and Allah will NEVER allow a single moment of your patience to go unrewarded & unwritten!

“And each person willl be paid in full of what he did; and He (Allah) is Best Aware of what they do.” (Az-Zumar 39:70)

A Muslim takes every available opportunity to benefit from everything – no matter what the circumstances are!

And this invincible mindset is perfectly described by the Prophet (peace be upon him):

“Amazing are the ways of a believer – there is good in every affair of his, and this is not the case with anyone else except for a believer. For if something good happens to him, he is thankful (to Allah), and thus there is good for him in it, and if a trial or difficulty befalls him, he is patient (in enduring the trial), and in that too, there is good for him” (Sahih Muslim)

Do we have what it takes to have these traits of a Believer, O brothers and sisters?

Let us all play our part to learn from & implement the ways of the Prophet as taught in the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet – and by Allah, if we do - of a surety, there will be a positive change in the society today

Allah knows best - may He make us steadfast upon patience and gratitude

How to be SERIOUSLY wealthy

Some practical advice you can do to be SERIOUSLY rich & wealthy – right here, right now – proven effective since more than 1400 years ago! Hearken, O believers!

Prophet Muhammad, (peace & blessings be upon him) said: “Richness (wealth) is not in having many possessions, but (true) richness is the richness of the soul – contentment (of the heart)” (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

People will only be wealthy & generous when they feel they have excess wealth. When you personally train yourself to feel contentment of the heart – satisfied with all that Allah has blessed you – this will have a powerful psychological effect that make you feel wealthy no matter what Allah grants to you – even if it’s not much! If you are content, even RM 100 can have a huge amount of blessing and suffice you.

..and if you don’t be content with what you have?

Your desires will come to no end! Even if Allah gives you double from what you have now, you will ask for more. Even if Allah gives you a Mercedes, you’d wish you’d have another Ferrarri!

Even if you get an iPhone 3Gs, you'd be unthankful because you didn't wait for the new and slick iPhone 4!!

These bottomless desires are beautifully expressed in a hadith of the Prophet (peace & blessings of Allah be upon him), when he said,

"If the son of Adam were given a valley full of gold, he would desire to have a second one; and if he were given the second one, he would desire to have a third, for nothing fills the belly of Adam's son except dust. And Allah forgives he who repents to Him." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, #446)

But you know what? When you are thankful & content – you’d realize that you are well off, after all!

When you are thankful & content – even with that little salary that you’ll get, you’ll feel you’re on top of the world..! (& even feel you have enough excess to give in charity!)

Isn’t this true richness, o fellow brothers & sisters?

Hasan Al-Basri once asked a person who was desirous of wealth, “would you like that I pay you 100,000 to take away your eyesight? Would you like that I pay you 100,000 for me to take away your ears and your hearing capabilities? Would you like that I pay you 100,000 for your hands? For your feet? For your nose? For your tongue? For your heart?”

To which the student replied “no” to all his questioned. Finally, he answered,

“you’re a walking millionaire, and you don’t even know it!”

O fellow brothers in humanity,

How many people out there are surviving with less salary, less pay, more children & more responsibilities than you? And yet our pay is ALWAYS “not enough”?
How many people out there are having to wake up at 4am to take the bus, because they can’t afford a car? And your car ain’t “slick enough”?
How many people out there are having to walk for hours and hours in one day just to get their daily supply of clean drinking water? And we complain of “lousy food”?
How many people out there are missing out on the beautiful sights of Allah’s creation because Allah takes away their eyesight?
How many people out there are having so much difficulty because they lost their feet & their ability to walk? And we hardly ever go to the masjid in congregational prayers & exercise our gratitude to the Almighty?

How many people out there are spending their lifetimes rotting away in prison? And we claim we “don’t have enough time” to study & benefit from the final Revelation of Allah – the Qur’an!

Look to those who have less than you - and you will realize you have everything that you can possibly need!

The Prophet said, “When one of you looks at (and compares yourself with) one who stands at a higher level than you with regard to wealth and physical appearance,

he should (instead) see one who stands at a lower level than you in regard to these things,

for this will (make you grateful, and) keep you from belittling Allah’s Favour to you” (Al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Be grateful for all that you have - and not only will you conquer your own self-desires - but amazingly, Allah will give you more!

And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed, "if you are thankful, I will give you more (of My blessings); but if you are thankless, verily! My Punishment is indeed severe" (Ibrahim 14:7)

“…And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his ownself, and whoever is ungrateful, (he is only ungrateful only for the loss of his own self). Certainly! My Lord (Allah) is Rich, Bountiful" (An-Naml 27:40)

and what if you persist in your desires?

"and he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah; and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful" (Al-Imran 3:144)

The greatest of riches that you can attain, O servants of Allah, is contentment of one’s soul, and having a contented heart, and this will not be achieved except through sincere humility to Allah, and calling upon Him in Du’aa and placing reliance upon Him.

Be the master of your desires, O servants of Allah – be content, and you shall set yourself free!

Modesty (Haya) - The Honour and Self-Respect of a Muslim!

Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Iman consists of more than seventy branches. And haya (modesty) is a part of faith.’” (al-Bukhari)

Allah tells us in the Qur'an, “O children of Adam, We have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of God's signs, that they may take heed.” (Al-A`raf 7:26)

Modesty is a beautiful virtue in Islam. In a time when the Arabs would treat their women like worthless creatures, and at the same time some Christian scholars went to the extent of even debating on whether or not the women have souls or are they of the jin - it was during this time, the teachings of Islam came in and completely liberated people of all these false ideas and mistreatment of women. Islam gave women a special status to be treated with kindness, gentleness, and utmost respect.

Prophet Muhammad, Rasulullah ﺻﻟﻰﺍﷲﻋﻟﻳﻪ ﻮﺳﻟﻢ said: “The most perfect of the believers in faith is he who is the best of them in conduct, and the best of you in conduct are those who are best to their wives” (At-Tirmidzi)

And to elevate them in status, the teachings of Islam established a very important part in every single human being, with a great emphasis on the women - self respect.

"Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at the forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allah is All-Aware of what they do." (An-Nur 24:30)

Men have been created with the natural disposition of being attracted to women. And it is out of this 'instinct' that Allah has commanded the women to cover themselves up to close the doors of evil from the eyes of man. When you cover yourself up, concealing the adornments and attractions of your body to men, this shows you pay attention to your honour - you don't want to men to drool at you, or to talk to you just for the sake of getting in bed with you. You want people to interact with you as a person, and not an object of sexual desire.

Women who cover their adornments from the eyes of prying eyes of men obviously aren't worried that "men don't want to marry me" because of the recognition that, in fact, it is these qualities, of self-respect, dignity, honour and God-conciousness towards Allah - these are amongst the qualities of the "dream girl" to a Muslim man.

Prophet Muhammad said: “Men choose women for four reasons: for their money, for their rank, for their beauty and for their religion, but marry one who is religious and you will succeed” (Bukhari, Muslim).

The Prophet (saw) also said, “A heart that is grateful (to Allah), a tongue that remembers and mentions (Allah), and a righteous wife who would assist you in the affairs of your life and religion: those are the best treasures for the people.”
(Al Bayhaqi, Tirmidhi)

But here today, in the society we live in, self respect and honour are no longer virtues that are no longer highly looked upon anymore. Here we see in the media everywhere - television, newspapers, internet - women are prioritizing the public display of their beauty to others and the adherence to 'fashion' so highly to the point that the necessity of haya and modesty has all but been forgotten. People who cover themselves up are looked upon as 'backward' or 'not following current trends'.

Right here, right now?
Which is what triggered me to write this blog today. My lovely wife Dewi just informed me that in today's newspaper had an article regarding the niqab. As yet another test upon mankind, Allah has ordained that the disbelievers raise the issue of the niqab (also known as 'purdah', or 'burqa', or the face covering which the Muslimah wear) upon the Muslim ummah. Here we see a great deal of authorities, be it countries, universities, governments - all of them going to great extents to prohibit women from wearing it. But the thing that ticked me off most, is the last statement of the article - "Oleh itu adalah sesuatu yang malang jika ada sesetengah umat Islam ingin membantah sesuatu yang dalam Islam sendiripun tidak mewajibkannya." (translated - Therefore it is unfortunate if there are some Muslims who are so adamant on wanting something which is not even obligatory in Islam)

Brothers and sisters in Islam! (i have no better way to express this, so excuse me) WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH YOU? These women want to cover themselves up from the eyes of men! These women may think their faces as being attractive and could be a fitnah for the eyes of other men, so they took the honourable move of covering themselves up. LET THEM DO SO!

Yes, whether or not it is obligatory has been a subject of great dispute and khliaf (differences) but the strongest opinion is that, indeed it is not obligatory - but that being said, it is still encouraged - the Prophet's wives wore it to prevent others from being attracted to them in any way.

If it is encouraged in Islam, let it BE! Help your Muslim sisters who pay attention to their honour - let them move towards the Haya which is so loved by Allah and His Messenger! What will you do when a trial like this happens? When foreign governments oppress our sisters' honour? You take their sides and go against Muslims? You too want to discourage your Muslim sisters from doing what is loved so dearly by Allah, for the sake of her modesty? Even one so-called Muslim SCHOLAR actually supports France's decision to ban the niqab?

Allahum-Musta'an.

And the irony is, on the next section of fashion, you have female artists showing off their bodies with very little clothing on their bodies. And you have MUSLIM writers promoting this fashion.

Allahum-Musta'an..

May Allah help us all in differentiating the good and the evil, and to loving our dignity, to being pleased with the beauty of His teachings to mankind. May Allah grant us the wisdom to sincerely become better people for the sake of earning His pleasure and the reward of Paradise, and to protect ourselves from the punishment of the Hellfire, for our ignorance and our arrogance.

"Alif Lam Mim. Do people think that they will be left alone because they say 'We believe', and that they will not be tested and tried? And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allah will CERTAINLY make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars!" (Al-Ankabut 29:1-3)

1 Year Anniversary - Yahoo!

Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh...

All praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. As of Yesterday, 26th December 2009, it is now officially one year since a very significant event in my life. An event which has given the result of many great blessings and prosperity in my life.

It's been 1 year since i quit smoking!

Alhamdulillah... and i've honestly never felt better. After years of subjecting my lungs to severe exposure of chemicals and intoxicants, on 26th December 2008, i have made the brave step to break myself free of the shackles of cigarettes and nicotine addiction.

It's amazing that i've come such a long way from where i started. Back in younger days i was quite a heavy smoker, and I couldn't imagine myself spending days without having a cigarette. Pretty much every single milestone in my daily life had to somehow be accompanied with cigarettes.I couldn't leave my house without making sure that i have a pack of cigarettes handy, or at least enough money to go out and buy a new pack if i'd finish my current one. Allahum-Musta'an.. I was so dependent on this stuff that it really made me feel WEAK.

I knew I had to quit. And so it began... months and months of self-conflict and denial. So how did I succeed? It's this amazing thing called Iman. Throughout the process of myself trying to quit, I was (and still am, of course) striving my best to improving myself and becoming a better person. And as the days, the weeks, the months passed by while I was still on cigarettes, I started to feel a spiritually unhealthy feeling inside of me... a disease of the heart inflicting myself. Almost as if I was planting seeds of hypocrisy. I asked myself:

"Do you really think God will allow you to be a good Muslim, whilst you openly, publicly, and slowly kill yourself with that stuff? "

Allah says: "..And He makes good things halaal for them and bad things haraam.." (Al-A’raf 7:157)

What good did smoking ever do to me? Besides having some company with a few friends who did the same? What makes me any different from guys who drink alcohol purely for the excuse of hanging out with other friends who drink, under peer pressure?

“O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves. Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you.” (An-Nisa’ 4:29)

"And spend in the Cause of Allah, and do not let your own hands throw yourselves into destruction, and persevere in doing acts of good. Truly, Allah loves the righteous good-dooers" (Al-Baqarah 2:195)

Subjecting ourselves to these thousands of chemicals every day, enslaving ourselves to the addiction of nicotine, and spending our wealth in this path of extravagance - are these not ways that we are killing ourselves?

the Prophet (saw) narrated to us in a hadith Qudsy that Allah says "O My servants, I have made oppression unlawful for Me and unlawful for you, so do not commit oppression amongst yourselves" (Muslim) Allah has made it unlawful (haram) for us to oppress each other; and one form of oppression that we always blindly overlook is the oppression against our own bodies. Our own bodies are a gift that Allah has bestowed on us; we don't own it, and it is not ours to do as we wish - He has entrusted us to take good care of it so we can use it in the way that pleases Him most.

And He didn't just entrust us with our bodies, we are also been entrusted with the gift of money. Allah says in the Qur'an:

"… and do not wastefully spend your wealth in the manner of a spendthrift. Those who are extravagant (i.e. spendthrift) are brothers of the Shayatin (the devils), and the Shaitan is ever ungrateful to his Lord." (Al-Israa' 17:26-27)

Spending money towards buying cigarettes - to buy things that we eventually end up burning - is a perfect literal representation of the expression 'burning money'. For what gain? What benefit?

Looking back and reflecting on these teachings granted to us by God, it was impossible for me to see that continued smoking would have some serious detrimental effects to my health, but worse yet, my heart as a Muslim. since we were young, we have been indoctrinated with the thinking that smoking is just makruh - something that is detested by Allah, but is not considered forbidden. What is our attitude with respect to this? Oh it's just makruh, it's okay... so what if Allah hates it?

Think about it - Whenever we find out that our parents don't like something, we try our utmost best to try and avoid it. Whenever our wives hate something, we try our best to please them by avoiding it. But when it's concerning Allah, the Supreme Creator, Nourisher, Sustainer and Lord of all these Creation, we put on the "oh it's okay, it's only makruh. Allah hates it but we're not sinful, so that's cool" attitude.... Allahum-Musta'an. Is this not a sign of a disease of the heart?

Alhamdulillah, Allah has given me the willpower to give it up. And He sent down help to me in the form of a handy little pill called Champix. I won't be having blatant advertisements here, don't worry =). But the effective methods of quitting smoking are out there... you just have to bite the bullet and go for it!

Allahu Akbar!

O Muslim brothers and sisters.. How much longer do we want to fool ourselves into thinking that smoking is not haram? How much longer do we want to close one eye to the disobedience to Allah at the unjustfulness and the oppression that we commit towards our own bodies?

You still need proof that it is haram, you say? Why - so you can find 100 different opinions, and when 99 of them say it is haram, and 1 of them say it is 'okay', you will blatantly choose that 1 opinion, in favor of your own personal preference?

Yes, people around you smoke. Perhaps your own father, perhaps your boss, perhaps your colleagues, perhaps your friends. And you feel 'its okay' because everyone around you is doing it. But God reminds us... stand up for yourself, and do not to simply follow the crowd - use your intelect, and think maturely -

"If you follow the MAJORITY of people on Earth, they will lead you astray. That is because they follow conjecture and fail to think" (Al-An'am 6:116)
"And when it is said to them: "Follow that which Allah has revealed", they say: "Nay, we shall follow that which we found our fathers (following)." (Would they do so) even if Syaitan invites them to the torment of the Fire?" (Luqman 31:21)

Let us support each other towards being better people. May Allah make it easy for us to follow His Straight Path, and abstain from sins and things which cause deficiencies in our hearts. Ameen...

Marriage!

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, brothers and sisters,

After all those months of hard work, trials and tribulations, finally., Alhamdulillah, by the uncountable Graces and infinite blessings of Allah upon us, I am now married to my darling wife, Dewi Abdul Rahim Mokti!

The eventful night of the Nikah ceremony on the Friday, 23rd November 2009 signified the beginning of a long and meaningful (insya Allah) life ahead for the both of us, as we departed from the life of bachelorhood into the blessed life of Marriage Life!

As I briefly alluded to in my previous post, marriage is an institution which is highly regarded in Islam. So much so that the Prophet (saw) said: "When a servant (of Allah) marries, he has (by that) completed half of his deen (religion & way of life). Let him then fear and revere Allah in regard to the other half" (At-Tabarani, verified to be hasan by Al-Albani)

And if we ponder at the fact that 'deen' is defined as a 'way of life', this hadith indicates that marriage is a means of fulfilling half of a person's life. And why is it not? When one can finally have a partner who you can hold, who can comfort you when you're feeling low, who will be the coolness of your eyes in times of distress? "And among His signs is that He created for you, from yourselves, spouses (wives), that you may dwell (in joy and security) unto them, and He set between you love and mercy; surely in that, are signs for those who reflect" (Ar-Rum 30:21).

Allah beautifully and eloquently captures the wonders of marriage by this short Verse of the Qur'an: "They (your spouses) are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them" (Al-Baqarah 2:187). SubhanAllah! What a beautiful way of describing the bond between a husband and a wife- A garment for each other! Imagine.. the garment is the closest thing to our body. A garment protects us... a garment shields our private parts from the eyes of others... a garmen provides us with comfort. A garment can sometimes even define our personalities!

With this halal methodology of intimacy, marriage also provides the means to guard a person's chastity and his honour. The Prophet (SAW) said in a hadith recorded in Bukhari & Muslim, "O young men! Those among you who can afford marriage, do so! For it helps lower the gaze and guard the private parts (from illegal sexual acts)".

It is unfortunate in the society today that many people no longer see the value of decency, honour and dignity in preserving one's chastity. The modern culture of intermingling has led to many corrupted beliefs, so much so that the Halal is made difficult, and the Haram is made easy. People resort to premarital sex, out of fear of responsibility, or out of fear of poverty or not being able to afford marriage.

Why i'm saying all this, brothers and sisters, is simple: just go get married. Practice your religion the way you should, in accordance to the uncreated Word of God (the Qur'an) and the beautiful teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (the Sunnah), and you will find that marriage is indeed one of the greatest blessings of happiness in life of this world. I know I made the right decision, insya Allah. I pray to Allah that this is the beautiful beginning of many great things to come.

The last few hours of my Bachelor life

Assalamualaikum warahmatuLlah wabarakatuh

Bismillah, was Solat was-Salam 'ala Rasulillah

Alhamdulillah, by the uncountable Graces of Allah, am now approaching the final couple hours of my bachelorhood. Zero Hour is nigh!

It's a mixed feeling of intense anxiety, excitement, nervousness and... worry

Marriage is an important institution in the life of a Muslim. It is regarded as a highly recommended Sunnah, or in most cases, an obligation upon us. So much so that the Prophet (pbuh) said that "whenever a servant (of Allah) marries, he has (by that) completed half of his religion. Let him then fear and revere Allah in regard to the other half" (At-Tabarani, hasan). Putting things into perspective, when Allah says "And I created not the jinn and mankind (for any) other (purpose) than to worship Me" (Ad-Dzariyat), marriage is regarded as fulfilling half your purpose in your life!!

Provided, of course, if we take it seriously.

Take it seriously? Of course we take it seriously, Faisal!

Not only is this an act of worship, this allowance of us to love each other is in fact one of the uncountable Mercies that He has bestowed upon mankind: "And among His signs, is that He created for you, from yourselves, wives (spouses) that you may dwell (in joy and security) unto them, and He set betwen you love and mercy. Surely, in that are signs for those who reflect" (Ar-Rum 30:21). When we put this into perspective, marriage is, in fact, an act of Worship which is prescribed to us by God Almighty. And just like other acts of worship - e.g. prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage, obviously, Allah has preordained for us a set of rules which we need to abide by, for these deeds to be accepted.

And of course, by the Mercy of ALlah, he sent down to us, the person that will guide us to this Truth, the final Messenger, Muhammad (pbuh). "It is He who has sent among the unlettered, a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His ayat (Quran verses), purifying them, and teaching them the Book and Wisdom - although they previously were in clear deviation" (Al-Jumu'ah 62:2). And so comprehensive are the teachings of this Messenger, that he has described to us every minute detail on how we want a perfect marriage.

And this perfect Guide is the Sunnah of the Prophet. We always take this term for granted, but do we ever think about the testimony of Imam Malik (ra) who said that "The sunnah of the Prophet is like the Ark of Noah - whoever is in it is saved, and whoever does not ride it, will drown".

So we ask the help of Allah to grant us the strength and the ability to be able to have the Marriage ceremony and reception in accordance to the Sunnah of the Prophet, in the way that pleases Him most. May He grant us the greatest treasure of the world, as described by The Prophet : "a heart grateful (to Allah), a tongue extolling (Allah), and a righteous wife who would assist you in the affairs of your life and religion - these are the best treasures for the people" (Al-Bayhaqi, At-Tirmidzi, verified authentic by Al-Albani)

Wish me all the best, brothers and sisters, that we may begin this institution of marriage on the Right Path, and stay on it. We need your du'aa!

Peace, blessings and the Mercy of Allah be upon you, O brothers and sisters!

I have recently been spending quite a bit of time reading up on the biography and personality of this one person. A very well known figure, many people know who he is but it seems that there are many aspects of his life which many people don't. It's unfortunate, because if we really study his character - there's a lot we can learn from this guy! See if you can figure out who he is:

He was the undisputed leader, the 'king' of his country during his time. He was also the commander of the nation’s armies. His courage, his succour and his might are distinguishable. He was the most courageous. He witnessed awkward and difficult times and stayed steadfast at enduring himself through them. More than once brave men and daring ones fled away leaving him alone, yet he stood with full composure facing the enemy without turning his back. One of the greatest warriors in his army used to testify that “whenever a fight grew fierce and the eyes of the fighters went red (in fear) as the two armies came face to face, we used to resort to him for help. And yet he was always the closest to the enemy line than all other warriors” (1)

One night the people of his city felt alarmed by some noise. Stricken by fear that they had been disturbed or attacked by some unknown forces, the people went out hurriedly out of their homes towards the source of this noise, but they found that this man, their leader, had already gone ahead of them. He was on his horse, with no saddle over it, and a sword slung around his neck, and bravely said to his people: “There is nothing to fear!” (2)

His stamina, endurance and forgiveness – out of a commanding position – his patience and standing what he detested – these were all talents, attributes and qualities gifted to him. Even wise men have their flaws, but this man, unlike everybody, the more he was hurt or injured, the more clement and patient he became. The more insolence an ignorant person exercised against him, the more enduring he became.

And yet, though he was the king of his nation, the undisputed leader of his lands, and having thousands of followers who would sacrifice their own lives for him, despite of all this – he never failed to uphold the highest of moral standards. By nature he was gentle and kind hearted, always inclined to be gracious and to overlook the faults of others. Politeness and courtesy, compassion and tenderness, simplicity and humility, sympathy and sincerity were some of the keynotes of his character. In the cause of right and justice he could be resolute and severe but more often than not, his severity was tempered with generosity. He had charming manners which won him the affection of his followers and secured their devotion.

He was the most modest and humble and always the first one to cast his eyes down. He forbade people to stand up at his presence as other people usually do for their kings. His companions testified – ‘he was shier than a virgin behind her veil. When he hates a thing, we could immediately tell it from the expressions of his face’ (4). When he got angry his face would go so red that you would think it were 'an infected red skin-spot with pomegranate grains on both cheeks' (5).

He used to visit the poorest of ailing persons and exhorted all his followers to do likewise (6) He would sit with the humblest of persons saying that every man is equal to each other (regardless of race and ancestry); righteousness alone was the criterion of one's superiority over another. He invariably invited people be they slaves, servants or the poorest believers, to partake with him of his scanty meals (7). Being their leader, he never felt inferior to be eating with the slaves and lower class. Loving the poor and the needy; entertaining them or participating in their funerals were things that he consistently observed.

Once he was travelling with his Companions and when it was time to have food prepared, he asked them to slaughter a she-sheep. A man said: I will slaughter it, another one said: I will skin it out. A third said: I will cook it. So he said: “I will collect wood for fire.” Out of respect for their leader, they said “No, we will suffice you that work.” He responded by saying “I know you can do it for me, but I hate to be privileged.” (8) so he went and collected fire-wood.

His cheerfulness was never withdrawn from anyone’s face; even at those whom he warned his people from or those whom he himself was on the alert of. He visited friends and inquired about people’s affairs. He confirmed what was right and criticized the awful and tried to undermine it. He was moderate in all affairs. He was equal to others and was not privileged. He would never act heedlessly, lest the others should get heedless. Each situation was dealt within its proper due.

His followers would examine each and every detail of his actions, and would attempt to imitate and follow them. Whenever he spoke, they all lowered their gaze immediately out of respect for him, and when he instructed or commanded something, his followers would race one another to do it. But whoever served him is served by him too. Utterances of complaints have never been said by him to his servants nor was his servant ever blamed for doing a thing or leaving it undone.

And to his family, he was was an inexhaustible stream of love, warmth, tenderness, sensitivity and emotions. He once told his followers that “the best of you is he whom is best towards his family. And I am the best of you” (9). He was the perfect lover to his family and wives; always playing and joking with them and winning their hearts. He used to express his love for his wife (10) by intending to drink from the same cup she drank from putting his lips on the place from which she drank sending a secret message warming up her heart and feelings.

In spite of his heavy burdens as being the leader of his people, the commander of the army and the moral and intellectual guidance to his followers, he did not forget his duties towards his family by helping them in the housework, valuing the work of his wives. There was no type of household work too low or too undignified for him. His wife testifies saying, "He always joined in household work and would at times mend his clothes, repair his shoes and sweep the floor. He would milk, tether, and feed his animals and do the household shopping." (11)

He would not hesitate to do the menial work of others, particularly of orphans and widows (12). Once when there was no male member in the house of the companion who had gone to the battlefield, he used to go to his house daily and milk his cattle for the inhabitants (13).

So, who is this man? Who is this man who, despite his extremely high position amongst his people – as their king, general, teacher and mentor – had an unparallelled level of humility, modesty, cheerfulness and was extremely kind and loving towards his companions and family?

A man, so decent, truthful and honest in speech, to the point that those who have exchanged speech with him, even his enemies, acknowledge this, and gave him the ever-so-famous nickname "the truthful and trustworthy one" (3)

Figured it out yet?

This man is no other than Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abdul Muttalib - the final Prophet and Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

“And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a Mercy of all existence (Al’Alamin)” (Al-Anbiya’ 21:107)

“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad s.a.w.) you have a good example to follow, for him who hopes for (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much” (Al-Ahzab 31:21)

Allah describes The Prophet’s beautiful conduct as part of His Mery and gifts to mankind;

“And by the Mercy of Allah, you dealt with them with gentleness. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you; so ignore their faults, and ask (Allah’s) Forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs..” (Al-‘Imran 3:159)

"Allah has sent me as an apostle so that I may demonstrate perfection of character, refinement of manners and loftiness of deportment." (Malik, Ahmad)

I won’t comment much further. Just look at the character of this man! SubhanAllah! Have love for this man! Make sure he has a place in your heart; follow his commandments and guidance, and we shall never go wrong!

“Say (O Muhammad, to mankind): “If you (really) love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” (Al’Imran 3:31)

Assalamualaikum! Peace, blessings and the Mercy of Allah be upon you all!

Alhamdulillah... today marks yet another new history and experience in the beautiful life of Faisal Abdul Latif, by the Grace of Allah. Me and my good friend, brother Shafik, joined in the Miri Novice 9 Archery Tournament.

Sure, we only started playing like a couple of months ago - but that didn't stop our burning ambition to put our skillz to the test! And to revive the sunnah of the Prophet of course insya Allah!

Motive also made sweeter, of course, by the fact that, the first prize is a brand new bow. Ain't no one gonna tell me that ain't worth a shot, yo!

Sure, it did feel awkward that me and Shafik were the only participants there with jenggots - not because they shaved, but because they didn't have any in the first place - besides us, pretty much everyone else in the competition were school kids. Haha. But subhanAllah these kids were good... it was a tough fight indeed.

But TabarakAllah.. Alhamdulillah I got 3rd place! nice!! =)

Can anybody spot the 2 dudes with the jenggots?

We picked up this newfound hobby only about 2 months ago, after we met with the Miri Coach who inspired us to join. And we've been pretty much hooked every since. It's a very enjoyable sport, but most importantly what makes it so much more meaningful than mere 'sport' is that it is actually an activity which was encouraged by the greatest man that ever walked the Earth - Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)!

Hadhrat Ibn Umar (ra) narrates that Rasulullah (saws) said: "Teach your sons swimming and archery and teach your daughters sewing" (Baihaqi)

Salamah ibn Al-Akwa` narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some people of the tribe of Banu Aslam who were practicing archery. The Prophet said, "O children of Ishmael! Practice archery as your father Ishmael was a great archer. Keep on shooting arrows and I am with (the team of) Banu so-and-so." So one of the parties ceased shooting, whereupon the Prophet said, "Why do you not shoot?" They replied, "How should we shoot while you are with them (i.e., on their side)?" On that the Prophet said, "Shoot and I am with all of you" (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
`Uqbah also said, "I heard Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, 'Allah will cause three persons to enter Paradise for one arrow: the maker when he has a good intention in making it, the one who shoots it, and the one who hands it. So shoot and ride, but your shooting is dearer to me than your riding. If anyone abandons archery after becoming an adept because of his distaste for it, it is a blessing he has abandoned; (or he said: for which he has been ungrateful)'" (Abu Dawud, An-Nasa'i, and Al-Hakim).

It really is quite apparent from these ahadeeth (i.e. sayings of the Prophet) that the Muslim character is always encouraged to keep himself strong and sharp.

Alhamdulillah that we have been given the ability to pursue this new hobby, and insya Allah it is hoped that this is one positive step towards encouraging people to follow and love the sunnah of the Prophet (SAW)! Go Go Archery Team SKO!

The Mikael Jackson conspiracy?

Peace & blessings of Allah be upon you all

I recently received this forwarded e-mail, which suggests the 'death' of Michael Jackson could be a murder conspiracy. Reading this e-mail, i can't help but be moved by some of the elements. I'll split this blog post into two parts; the actual e-mail contents and my comments

The "Story"

"Michael Jackson (MJ) was known as the most loving person in the world. He gave up most of his assets for charity and all his life, he fought for equality of the African Americans, AIDS victims, Against Drug Abuse,Against Abortion, Against Child Labor and secretly channelled his properties for the hungry children of the world. However, he wasn't peace at heart. He always think of himself as a child trapped inside a man's body. Being Peter Pan is all his dream, never to grow up, forever a child. That inspires him to build Neverland - a heaven for children. Children of all ages and races are welcomed to Neverland. MJ had so much love to give.

However, he made a mistake which he didn't know of the consequences. He saw the peaceful life his brother, Jermaine (Muhammad Abdul Aziz) had as a Muslim - true, Jermaine faced so much pressure that he moved to Bahrain.

In 1989, MJ made a press conference which shocked the world, "I have seen the Islam in the life of my brother, I have read the books about Islam. And I'd love to someday feel the calmness and peace of Islam...."

Since that, MJ's life was never the same again. He was accused of so many accusations against child molestation. MJ was not someone who can deal with much pressure as he is a 'delicate child'. All the extortion and black mail followed after that. Everything he did was being seen as wrong in the eyes of the Media. All these are to influence his fans to hate MJ. If he is hated, then he would not be influencial anymore.

For several years, he stayed in England. Getting motivation from a long time friend, Cat Stevens, who had converted into Islam - named Yusuf Islam. From him, MJ learnt how Yusuf had survived being Muslim. He made friends with a song writer, Zain Bhikha too, who wrote a song titled, "GIVE THANKS TO ALLAH", which he wanted MJ to sing whenever he is ready.

Following his trial, MJ withdrew to Bahrain, where he was the special guest of sheik Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the son of Bahrain's king. It was then that Michael began to give conversion more "serious thought."MJ stayed in Bahrain for approximately 3 years. He studied Islam, the prayers and learn to read the Koran (al-Quran).

Finally, he came back to Los Angeles and in November 2008 MJ had formally converted to Islam in a ceremony at a close friend's house in Los Angeles. He perform Haj with the King of Bahrain and son on December 2008.

He had a hidden agenda when he wanted to make a final comeback. He annouced in a press conference on March 2009, "This will be my final concert. I'll see you all in July...."

He planned that during his concert, he would announce that this is the FINAL concert as he wouldn't be performing anymore. He will declare that he is a Muslim and will only sing with Yusuf Islam and Friends. At the end of the concert, he will be singing the song, "GIVE THANKS TO ALLAH" with Yusuf Islam. That is the reason why he chose London as his final concert venue instead of the USA. It was because he thought he could escape the USA's extortion, and that he could perform with yusuf Islam who is in England.

At 12.30am, 25th June 2009, he hugged his production manager and said, "After reherasing for 2 months, I am finally ready for the concert..." Before leaving to sleep, he waved his dancers, "It was a good night everyone. I'll see you all tomorrow..." The next thing... He was pronouced dead at 2.26am....

When 911 was called, there are so much questions asked. It is as if they didn't know who MJ is and where he lived. The questions asked are more towards to delay time. The hospital said the autopsy result can only be obtained after 2 months - very illogical as even the worst African technology could obtain the result in less than 2 weeks.

MJ's family members opt for second private autopsy as they started to feel something fishy is going on. The result came out in about 4 days - MJ was drugged with high dosage of anaesthetic - drug that brings about a reversible loss of consciousness, if used to much could stop the heart from beating.

Another result which was not aired in the media was, MJ's stomach is empty of this drug, but his blood were filled with it - same case as the death of Marilyn Monroe. The private doctors also found many needle marks, afraid to be forced injections given to MJ on his bed.

In CNN Live after a week, Barack Obama was interviewed. And he said, "I love MJ, I grew up listening to his songs. It is a great loss, but rest assured that there is no conspiracy in his death..." Now, why must a President made such statement before the official autopsy result came out? How would he know that there is no conspiracy without the
post-mortem result? Seems like someone is afraid of his shadows.

MJ was known to the world as a person who is against drug abuse. Why must he be addicted to drug, then? If he wanted to commit suicide, why rehearse for his concert? And why will he want to see his dancers the next day?

Enough about his death. I am sure people around the world is not stupid anymore. These supreme power can fool us during the Marilyn Monroe conspiracy, Martin Luther King and Princess Diana. But in this MJ's case, they left too many loopholes for those who think...!!

MJ's family was about to give him a Muslim burial with the help of The Brotherhood of Islam. But, the CIA showed up at Neverland's door - blackmailed them that if they do so publicly, Katherine (MJ's mother) would be pull off from MJ's 3 children's custody as well as MJ's estates. Instead, they'll hire Debbie Rowe for the purpose, and the court will be in
their favour. So much for democracy and fairness...

Finally, they agreed to let MJ have a Muslim Burial in Neverland. But in condition, must show to the public a Christian Memorial Service, as to prove to the world that MJ was never a Muslim.

So, Staples Centre was just a normal show. That's why the coffin was closed and sealed.

MJ was buried days earlier. The Gold Coffin was empty. They were about to bury the Coffin according to Christianity ways in Hollywood - as in their deal with the USA Government.

These happened, because the USA is afraid of the rising numbers of Muslims in the world.

My thoughts

Forget about the conspiracy. In fact, let's forget about the whole 2nd half of the e-mail. What grabbed my heart here is the perspective of MJ's life. Granted of course, some of it may be true and some of it may be not, but for purposes of reminding ourselves, let us just assume this entire story to be true =)

Let's really take some time to think about it, brothers and sisters.

Life before & after Islam

Here we have a pop singer. Not just any singer - 'The King of Pop', so to speak. Perhaps one of the most successful musicians in history - if one were to look at his material posessions, he had it all.

And yet, look at his state of mind. 'He always think of himself as a child trapped inside a man's body. Being Peter Pan is all his dream, never to grow up, forever a child. That inspires him to build Neverland - a heaven for children.' Here we have a man who never truly felt 'at peace' - conflicted with his own identity. I mean, seriously, by one's 40s, most people don't feel this kind of identity crisis and never feeling the true happiness and satisfaction that life had to offer.

Yet this man did. And whether that caused this man further grief, we'll perhaps never know; Allahu a'lam. But he did discover peace... through his brother, Jermaine, a.k.a Muhammad Abdul 'Aziz - one who lived in calmness and peace after his reversion to Islam... Allahu Akbar!

These people knew how it was like to feel empty inside and having no ultimate purpose. And then when Islam came, it fulfilled their emptiness and gave them peace of mind. They knew what it was like to have a heart that was finally alive after being dead all these years!!! This is indeed the gift of the sweetness of iman! Ibn Taymiyyah once said that “if the kings knew the happiness and sweetness that we felt, even they would try to obtain iman and pry it away from our barehands”!

Being born-Muslim, it is easy to overlook these things... and we take this blessing for granted. Sometimes we take 'religion' as a burden, always procrastinating things and putting them so low on our priority at times. Yet, were we to feel the emptiness of heart, the grief and the sorrow from disbelief and lack of iman, we'll never understand true happiness ever again and would lead miserable lives.

In one incident, 'Umar Al-Khattab, remembering his days of Jahilliyyah (days of ignorance before embracing Islam), laughed to himself, and suddenly he cried. When he was asked, he said, "i laughed because remembered in one incident, i went out to travel but i forgot to carry my 'mini stone idol'. So i got restless, and i took a date fruit and carved my 'god' from that date fruit. So during my travels, i would pray to that fruit. Until there came a time, when i got so hungry, and I had nothing to eat except that 'god'. So i ate that god'. Then he explained why he cried, and he said, that during the days of ignorance, he buried his daughter alive. And while he was digging a grave to plant her in, some dirt stained his beard, and his daughter, while being buried, seeing this dirt, went up to 'umar and wiped the dirt away from his beard. And he continued to bury her anyway. That is what made 'umar cry.

Before the coming of Islam... 'umar never felt that these 2 acts were strange... in the times of jahiliyyah these things seemed perfectly normal.
Ponder over this, brothers and sisters - the gift of Islam is truly beautiful!

Salvation just before death..

The Prophet (SAW) said: "I swear by Allah - there is no God but He - one of you may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise till there is naught but an arm's length between him and it, when that which has been written will outstrip him so that he performs the deeds of the people of the Hell Fire; one of you may perform the deeds of the people of the Hell Fire, till there is naught but an arm's length between him and it, when that which has been written will overtake him so that he performs the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters therein." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Here we have a man who lived about what, 40 years of his life, being a pop star, a musician. We all know the kind of life that a 'famous pop star' usually surrounds him self with - Sex, Drugs, and Rock'N'Roll goes the famous saying. And finally, at the end of his life, he converted to Islam. To islam... all his previous sins, by the Mercy, Love and Grace of Allah, all of it erased completely - as sinless as a newborn baby. Not only that, but MJ managed to perform Hajj before death!

At the very last few moments of his life, he embraced Islam, and insya Allah if he died as a Muslim, he will live to enjoy paradise for all eternity!! Allahu Akbaar!

How many of us will be able to die as Muslims? How many of us have repented enough to die in a state of our sins being forgiven by Allah? How many of us will even be able to perform Hajj before death?

So great is the Mercy of Allah, that He allowed MJ the chance to save himself. We must remember, brothers and sisters - just because we are Muslim, doesn't mean we are definitely saved. We need to constantly remind ourselves and remain firm in our faith! As the Prophet stated in the hadith above, that just like embracing islam at the end of one's life will cause him eternal salvation and happiness, likewise, an evil deed at the very last moments of our lives might cause damnation for all eternity. We seek Allah's refuge from that, and we ask that He makes us steadfast and firm in our religion.

The good man that was MICHAEL JACKSON

We all know, that Michael was a very generous fella. He'd give lots of money to charity, and in fact it is said that the charity that he has made public is only a small portion of the actual amount of charity that he had given in secret. One may ask, does he get any reward for all the charity he did during his pre-islamic days?

'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr reported that Hakeem ibn Hizaam told him that he said to the Messenger of Allaah (SAW): "O Messenger of Allaah, do you think that I will be rewarded for the (good) things like giving charity, freeing slaves and upholding family ties that I did during the Jaahiliyyah (days of ignorance before Islam)?"

The Messenger of Allaah (SAW) said: "You became Muslim because of the good that you had already done." (Reported by al-Bukhaari).

As a result of his sincere charitable deeds, being guided to Islam is Allah's reward to MJ. Now, can anybody think of a better reward than Paradise? Peace, happiness, bliss, for all eternity?

A conspiracy against Islam - really?

Most people will begin to look at the bleak story that involves the conspiracy of the murder of Mikael. That perhaps somone wanted him 'dead' before he could succeed his final world tour to publically announce that he embraced Islam? But then again - so what?

Think about it, friends. He was rehearsing to get back into the music biz one last time. In a world tour once again. Now we all know that during Michael Jackson concerts, a lot of crazy stuff happens. People go wild, hysterical and insane. All the madness, all the evil deeds that take place in the concert.

But Allah has taken away MJ's life before allowing him to distort his iman and be answerable to these sins. Nothing happens except by the will and infinite Wisdom of Allah, and perhaps the great Hikmah (wisdom) behind this is that Mikael is saved before he gets a chance to get back to his swan song.

And these 'facts' which suggest the conspiracy is bound to attract a lot of attention from the mass public. Despite all the things he has been accused of, let's face it - people love Michael Jackson. And to know that this man embraced Islam before his death - that's bound to attract some attention to Islam. Perhaps this 'conspiracy' might even be a victory for islam!

Just like the incident of Hudaibiyah, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The Muslims signed a treaty with the Pagans of Mekkah, and several agreements in the treaty seemed like it caused a great loss for the Muslims - especially because the Muslims who were from Mekkah had to return to Mekkah. And yet, Allah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the Qur'an, "Verily, We have given you (O Muhammad) a manifest victory" (Al-Fath 48:1). And true enough, as historians quote, as a result of the Treaty Of Hudaibiyah, thousands of Mushrikeen embraced Islam (if i'm not mistaken, more than double the number of Muslims since before the treaty!).

Just like 911 somehow caused many other non-Muslims to be interested in Islam, and more actually in turn embraced islam, could this murder conspiracy also be a victory/blessing in disguise? Could this be the Hudaibiyah of our day? Allahu a'lam...a little optimism never hurts, friends

Yes, on one hand it seems like a tragedy, but we as people who are still alive can learn a lot from this story. Forget for a moment that this is a conspiracy, and think about the amazing journey that MJ went through. The journey from Michael Jackson, King of Pop, to Mikael, the believing Muslim. Regardless of the authenticity of the story above, i still find it a very touching and inspiring story... may Allah grant us with the wisdom to take the best lessons from Mikael. We pray that MJ died a Muslim, insya Allah, and that Allah accepts his submission to Him.

Assalamu'alaikum waRahmatuLlah, brothers and sisters...

There are many different ways people try to achieve happiness. Yet, in their ignorance, many of them seek happiness by doing certain things at the expense of something greater. Or in their stubbornness and heedlessness, they pay no heed to the warning signs that lay ahead. In pursuit of carnal pleasures and temporary happiness, they forget the most important things in life.

Likewise, i was that person. I sought happiness through many different means (many of which i discovered were Haram). And yet.... at that time... Life felt meaningful and wholesome... i liked it.

But something was missing.

It lacked a sense of direction, a true sense of meaning and long-term bliss. Whenever I would spend hours doing these activities, they gave me a certain happiness, but whenever it was over, that was it - it was over. We would share moments of rapture and extreme joy, and yet, the moment it was over, when we went back home, lying in our beds, in a blink of an eye - it disappeared.

We used to ponder at the futility and uselessness of the hobby of drinking. One would spend his wealth decadently and spend his precious hours with friends to destroy his sobriety, lose his mind, do shameful acts, only to wake up the next morning, with a painful headache, no memory of what happened the night before, and usually in regret of the state he is in. It brings no benefit to him, and in fact it brings nothing but harm.

So busy was I to judge others by their actions, that I never really put into perpsective - that what I was doing wasn't all that different at all! I felt as if life had lacked some sense of meaning, of direction. Life was from one enjoyment to another. Whenever we felt anguish or difficulty, all we thought about was to get to that next enjoyment. After a great weekend, we get to the depressing Monday and only look forward to the Friday, without appreciating or enjoying the little blessings of the days that pass by.To what end? This cannot possibly be what life is about. There has to be some way that we can constantly live in peace, bliss and happiness without this void in our hearts.

And then, by the Grace, infinite Mercy and Blessings of Allah, He Shows me the path - the path of Guidance, of light - of salvation. Slowly i begin to learn again, what does it truly mean to be a Muslim. I learn the error of my past ways... I learn what it was that saved mankind from their own ignorance and arrogance, since 1400 years ago.

And as Allah, Exalted is He, continually enlightens this path for me, I begin to truly see the perfection of this religion that is Islam. Slowly, I began to feel that something which i have always yearned for - true happiness.

"Those who believe, and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah: Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest" (Ar-Ra'd 13:28)

Narrated Abu Musa (RA) the Prophet (SAW) said, "The example of one who remembers (& glorifies praises of) his Lord, in comparison to the one who does not remember his Lord, is that of a living creature compared to a dead one" (Bukhari)

And Alhamdulillah, challenging as it may be, Allah has made things gradually easier for me. To abandon the things that I used to love so much - one would think that perhaps i may have been in some state of coercion or I have been compelled to do such - in which I would definitely feel conflicted and unhappy. And yet, by abandoning these things which I used to love so dearly, I actually felt happier. Yes, you lose out on a few things in this world, but you begin to feel something you've never felt before - a sweetness, unlike any other you would ever feel. This is the sweetness of iman. You feel your heart is suddenly alive! It's amazing what Allah can bless with us... Allahu akbar!

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) used to say in the beginning of every khutbah, "He whomsoever Allah guides, there is none that can misguide him (from the Straight Path), and he whom Allah misguides, there is none that can guide him"

"Allah guides to His Light whom He wills.." (An-Nur 24:35)

So I challenge you, dear reader... go now, take your ablutions (wudhu') and perform solat to Allah, and in your final sujud, make sincere du'aa, and ask Him to guide you. Ask him to show you what it means to be happy. Ask Him to soften your heart, to be able to let go of your egos and self-desires, so that you may be able to easily receive bliss and the sweetness of faith.

"And your Lord has said: Make du'aa to Me, I will respond do you" (Surah Ghafir, 60)

"And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (tell them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me. So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright" (Al-Baqarah 2:186)

If you are sincere and persistent, it is impossible that He does not help you.

Let's achieve this success together, O believers! If perhaps we may help each other to receive the ultimate goal of salvation, then let us do it together!!
